Science Fiction novellas and Novels
The most general understanding of the Science Fiction genre is described as stories focusing on how science and technology affect individuals and civilizations.
However, we all know that a good science fiction novel goes much deeper than that. According to many, it is a genre of speculative fiction, typically dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. Science Fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations, and has been called a "literature of ideas." It usually avoids the supernatural, and unlike the related genre of fantasy, historically, science-fiction stories were intended to have a grounding in science-based fact or theory at the time the story was created, but this connection is now usually limited to hard science fiction.
Science Fiction also includes ideas about how the characters of the story deal with one another, and how intellectually, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually they come to terms with what the science portion of the story gives them. They develop various coping mechanisms to handle new discoveries, and these often interplay with their cohorts in the story; some in a positive way, some in a negative way.
Science Fiction novels are three dimensional, dealing equally with the people, places, and time of the story, each facet bringing with it a new depth and richness in tension and surprise. Science Fiction stories are never boring, and usually ask questions which may or may not be answered by the story's end.
Sub-genres include Cyberpunk;Steampunk; Time Travel;Alternate History;Military Science Fiction;Superhuman;Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic;Space Opera;Space Western;Social Science Fiction;Climate Fiction; and Science Fiction Horror
Submit Your Manuscript for consideration FOR a traditional publishing contract today!
Traditional Publishing... What exactly does that mean? When you traditionally publish with Grey Wolfe Publishing, it means that your manuscript has been specifically selected for its excellence in story concept, world building, character development, plot mechanisms, audience appeal, and sales potential. Our goal is to give you a similar (although we believe better) experience that you might receive working with one of the "big five" publishing houses.
If your manuscript is selected, here's what we'll do for you:
We will diligently edit your book with a four-stage editorial process, helping you to refine the scene, setting, characters, plot and fact checking of your story. Of course, we'll also help you with the smaller editorial issues like spelling, grammar and appropriate word choice, too.
Notice that we said that we "help you" to refine your work. This means that we will work as your editorial partner, helping you to understand the changes we are suggesting, but giving you an equal voice in the process. We'll explain why we think changes need to be made, so that you can understand our perspective, and we can engage in an open dialogue about the issues. After all, it's your work, and we want to retain your authenticity as an author throughout the publishing process.
We will design a custom cover for your book based on your notes to us about your vision of what it should look like. Our team of extremely talented artists will create outstanding, one of a kind artwork that will grab a reader's attention as they notice it on a bookshelf. You'll have direct collaboration input on the design, and the be part of the final approval process.
Interior design for print, large format, ebook (in four formats), and audiobook that meet or exceed industry standards. We'll not only make sure your book is "correct", we'll make sure it looks great, too!
We'll handle all the legal stuff... Copyright and Library of Congress Registration, ISBN and pricing bar codes in print, ebook, and audiobook, including any overseas foreign language registrations that may become necessary.
We'll develop a marketing campaign for your book which will include social media, bookmarks, posters, postcards, a media kit, website, and any other marketing tools that we believe will benefit the sales of your book. Our PR manager will engage with media specialists in television, radio, print, and internet marketing to bring a spotlight to your work and help you sell books.
We will connect with foreign and domestic distributors to give your book the very best exposure possible. We'll contact both independent and big-box booksellers to entice them to carry your title, and arrange for reading and signing events.
No expectation of a "right of first refusal". If you're not happy with us as a publishing partner, you are not required to publish your next book with us... just fulfill the agreement on this one, and then you're free to make a new choice.
If your manuscript is selected, here's what will be expected of you:
Your undivided attention and cooperation during the entire editorial and design process.
A five year commitment (contract to be shared if your manuscript is selected), giving Grey Wolfe Publishing complete and total control of all reproduction, sales, distribution, marketing, and merchandising rights, responsibilities, and decisions.
Your full cooperation in promotion and marketing endeavors, whenever possible, toward generating sales.
An agreement of a 50/50 split of royalties AFTER recoupment, to be paid bi-annually.
Manuscript Submission Guidelines:
All submissions must be sent electronically, via the Grey Wolfe Submission Portal (button below), in MS Word (.doc or .docx formats). We do not accept hardcopy (paper) submissions
All work must be typed in #12 Calibri font, double-spaced, with a blank space between paragraphs.
All margins should be set at one inch.
All submissions must be written in English.
Submissions may be between 15,000 and 100,000 words in length. Longer manuscripts may be considered if we feel the complexity of the story is well served by the word count. Shorter novellas may be accepted with the understanding that additional writing (with a Grey Wolfe Editor/Coach) may be necessary to better serve the publication process.
We understand the editorial process may change your work. However, the work you submit should be your “best paw forward”. Be certain you have resolved most spelling, punctuation and grammar errors before submitting.
Include your contact information in the header of your submission… book title, name, phone number, email address.
Please allow up to eight weeks for a thorough evaluation of your manuscript before contacting us regarding acceptance or rejection. Once your manuscript has been reviewed, we will contact you regarding its status. No phone calls, please, regarding your manuscript's status.
