You may include curse consequences ranging from gentle to gruesome.
We will accept submissions from "G" to "R" ratings. So, blood, guts, and gore are all acceptable. However, sexually explicit entries are prohibited.
Contest entries will only be accepted electronically through the Grey Wolfe Publishing Submission Portal (blue button below). Accepted formats are Open Office, MS Word, or RTF. Paper submissions will not be accepted.
Entries must be a minimum of 2,000 words; and may reach a maximum of 10,000 words. Entries may not exceed 10,000 words.
Entries will only be accepted from the USA and Canada; and must be written in English.
As this is a writing contest, submissions will NOT enjoy editorial support before publication, and not all entries will be published. So we suggest that you "put your best paw forward" and correct any errors before submitting.
There is no entry fee for this contest.
We must have a minimum of 15 submissions to award ANY prizes for this contest.
Employees, and current Grey Wolfe Publishing and Write Duck Press authors are eligible to enter and win.
Writers may submit as many entries as they choose, but each must be submitted separately.
Multiple entries included on a single submission form will disqualify ALL entries submitted on that form.
Writers are encouraged to submit brief bio information and a headshot (300dpi jpg format black & white only) to publish should their entry take a top prize or honorable mention award. These additional pieces will not be requested from writers or past anthology contributors if they are not included at the time of contest entry.
The Submission Deadline is December 31, 2017.
Contest Rules, Requirements, and Guidelines
Write either an ancient or modern curse that might be used to protect a book from thieves or vandals.
Imagine the scribe who would have written the curse. Tell us, why did they feel the need to protect the book with a curse?
The book being protected should match the time of the curse, i.e. an ancient book is protected by an ancient curse; a modern book is protected by a modern curse.
Only divulge the text of the curse and the circumstances of the curse's creation; don't reveal the consequences just yet.
Tell us a story in which a character first discovers the book. Describe the title, type, genre, or purpose of the book, and the circumstances surrounding the discovery. It can be a fiction or non-fiction book that is discovered.
You must include the geographic location and year when the book is found. The book may be found on Earth or somewhere else.
Describe your main character and how he or she discovers the book's curse. Remind your readers of the text of the curse.
Feel free to include as many subplots and secondary characters as you feel necessary to tell your story.
Does your main character steal or vandalize the book? Describe how and why he or she perpetrates the act.
What curse consequences does the main character and any secondary characters encounter? How do they endure, manage, escape or fail when confronted with those consequences?
Don't forget to include an interesting and well-contrived ending.
